Past and Present Farming Experience:

I have been around horses since the age of 5. Over the past 28+ years I took horsemanship lessons, volunteered at a therapeutic horsemanship facility for over 15 years, taught therapeutic riding lessons, and in 2020 was gifted my first horse Otis after he retired from the therapeutic riding program that I taught for.

I was in 4-H here in Maine for seven years in both the dog and leadership projects and upon graduation from college I worked for 4-H in Cumberland County and Cooperative Extension for an additional seven years before needing to find a career that could better financially support the search for my first home/farm. Through my 4-H experiences I have a deeper understanding of Maine farm life but certainly still have a lot to learn about aspects beyond horses.

I currently work in communications and marketing for a nonprofit therapeutic horsemanship association. I would love to be able to combine my marketing skills, event planning experience, and background in both formal and informal education programs, to create a successful business that brings folks to the farm to learn more about animals, farming, and themselves in the process.

Business Plan and/or future farming vision and goals:

I have always wanted a small hobby farm with horses, goats, sheep, and a vegetable and herb garden. My immediate need is to purchase a minimum of 2 acres of land so that I can bring my horse home to live with me as he ages and requires more consistent care. Raw land for me to build a small house on, or land with a home and barn space are all being considered. Huge bonus for land with minimal trees to help cut costs. In an effort to combine resources and support, I have a friend who is also looking for the same thing so larger parcels of land (5+ acres) that could be split in two at time of sale for us to each legally have our own property, but work together and support each other, is highly desirable. I'm currently working on figuring out a future business plan best suited for a larger property (15+ acres, more the better) that would incorporate what is already being done with the property (fruit trees, gardens, etc.) and adding in an agritourism side including an event space for weddings and retreats, as well as an opportunity for children and adults to enjoy animals while participating in smaller on-farm events such as yoga, arts and crafts, etc., so that the farm can eventually be my primary career. I am very much open to whatever possibilities present themselves whether that's a solo venture on a smaller property to start, or a joint venture on a much larger parcel.
